While training at Nottingham’s Television Workshop, Morton joined a friend from the Magic Circle on stage, performing illusions including the famous Pendragon “Metamorphosis” trick. Her background in dance and gymnastics helped her master the physically demanding escape act before a childhood car accident ended her gymnastics career.
Morton says she once hoped her unusual experience would earn her an audition for Nolan’s 2006 film The Prestige. Two decades later, she finally collaborated with the director in The Odyssey, portraying a nuanced version of Circe.
Rather than depicting the enchantress as a straightforward villain, Nolan’s film presents Circe as a survivor of wartime violence who transforms Odysseus’ men into swine out of fear and self-preservation. Morton said the character reminded her of generations of women whose stories are shaped by conflict and abuse, making the role deeply personal.
Her performance has earned widespread praise, with Nolan revealing that the crew spontaneously applauded one of her takes—something he said had not happened since Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight. Morton called the comparison emotional and a profound honor.
Filmed in Scotland, where her family has deep roots, Morton said the location added authenticity to her performance. Surrounded by practical effects, an engaged cast and crew, and the natural beauty of the landscape, she described the experience as “true movie magic.”
