In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Bareilles recalled joining Maroon 5 on its 2007 tour as her hit song "Love Song" was rising on the charts. She said she was surprised by the rock-and-roll lifestyle around her, including seeing cocaine for the first time at a party. Bareilles said she did not use the drug and has never tried cocaine.
When she toured with the band again in 2011, she was amused by fans throwing underwear on stage during Maroon 5's performances. She joked that her first thought was whether the fans had brought an extra pair.
Despite the unusual moments, Bareilles said Maroon 5 treated her and her band with kindness. She described the group as "big brothers" who welcomed them on the road and shared their experience and support.
Bareilles also discussed her upcoming album, Good Grief, her first in seven years. She said the music was inspired by depression during the COVID-19 pandemic and the deaths of two close friends.
Reflecting on those losses, Bareilles said grief needs to be shared rather than faced alone. While she wishes her friends were still alive, she believes the experience changed her in meaningful ways and deepened her understanding of love and loss.
