Savannah Guthrie Takes Break From Today to Film New Wordle Game Show

Savannah Guthrie is taking a short leave from NBC's Today to film the first season of the new game show Wordle.

Guthrie announced on Thursday that she will spend the next few weeks filming the series, which is expected to premiere in 2027 during prime time. NBC has not announced who will fill in for her on Today while she is away.

The game show, based on the popular word puzzle owned by The New York Times, will feature teams of three competing to solve word puzzles for cash prizes. It is executive-produced by Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog and The New York Times. Fallon said Guthrie was the ideal choice to host after seeing her performance in the pilot.

The TV adaptation follows the success of the Wordle game, which became a global phenomenon after its 2021 launch and was acquired by The New York Times in 2022.

Guthrie's leave comes as her family continues searching for her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1. In a recent statement, Guthrie thanked law enforcement and the public for their support and said her family remains committed to finding her mother.

Today airs weekdays on NBC. Wordle is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
