Damon, who plays the Greek hero Odysseus, said Nolan did not have every detail planned before filming the famous Trojan Horse scene. Just a few days before shooting, Damon asked Nolan how he planned to film it. Nolan simply replied, "I don't know."
Instead of following a strict plan, Nolan decided that everyone would get inside the giant wooden horse and work out the scene together. Nolan, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, the IMAX camera crew, and the actors all squeezed into the horse to create the sequence naturally.
Damon said this way of working made the film feel more like an independent movie, where ideas develop during filming instead of being fully planned in advance. He praised the energy and realism that came from this approach.
During the filming, actor Jon Bernthal, who plays Menelaus, spent time in freezing water while shooting in Morocco during winter. Damon remembered Bernthal shaking from the cold but refusing to stop. Even when Nolan checked on him, Bernthal told the team to keep filming.
Damon said Bernthal's dedication inspired the entire cast. It showed everyone that they should give their best effort, even in difficult conditions, until Nolan decided it was time to stop.
Actor John Leguizamo also admired Nolan's leadership. When he first arrived on set, he was told that Nolan was inside the Trojan Horse with the actors, the cinematographer, and the IMAX camera. Leguizamo said he was impressed because Nolan was willing to do everything he asked of his cast.
The Odyssey is based on Homer's famous Greek epic poem. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus.
The movie is also the first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The Odyssey will be released in theaters on July 17.
