Shania Twain Says Life’s Hardships Made Her Stronger

Shania Twain says years of personal hardship have made her stronger as she celebrates the release of her seventh studio album, Little Miss Twain.

The 60-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter said the album looks back on her childhood and includes personal stories from her early life. It features collaborations with Tanya Tucker, Josh Homme, The War and Treaty, and her son, Eja Lange.

Twain said growing up in poverty in Timmins, Ontario, forced her to mature quickly as she helped care for her younger siblings and supported her mother through difficult times.

She also reflected on later challenges, including the deaths of her mother and stepfather in a car crash, her divorce from producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, and vocal cord surgery after Lyme disease affected her voice.

"I've gotten through difficult times by being capable of finding courage, being brave and pushing through the fear," Twain said. "Fear fuels me."

Twain said recording with country singer Tanya Tucker was especially meaningful because her late mother had once hoped she might follow a similar path. She described Little Miss Twain as a full-circle project that allowed her to revisit her past with gratitude.

Looking ahead, Twain said she now feels more confident and in control of her life, adding, "I am in charge again."
