Whoopi Goldberg Says Critics of Elliot Page’s Casting Can Skip ‘The Odyssey’

Whoopi Goldberg defended Elliot Page's casting in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey during Tuesday's episode of The View, responding to criticism from conservative commentator Ben Shapiro.

Shapiro questioned Page's casting, calling it an "absolute puzzler" and arguing that the actor was not suited for the role. Goldberg dismissed the criticism, saying that people who dislike the casting do not have to watch the film. "If you don't want to see it, don't go see it. Why do you care who's cast in it?" she said.

Page plays Sinon, a supporting character and cousin of Matt Damon's Odysseus. Goldberg also criticized the frequent use of the term "woke," saying it is often applied to ordinary people simply living their lives rather than promoting an agenda.

Before the official casting was announced, some critics had incorrectly claimed that Page would play Achilles, prompting reactions from several conservative figures, including Elon Musk. Actress Lupita Nyong'o's casting also drew criticism from some commentators.

Despite the online backlash, The Odyssey has performed strongly at the box office. The film recorded the biggest opening of Christopher Nolan's career and has surpassed $300 million in worldwide ticket sales.
