Chase Stokes Recalls Saving Madison Bailey From Drowning on ‘Outer Banks’ Set

Chase Stokes has recalled a frightening moment on the set of “Outer Banks” when he realized his costar Madison Bailey was struggling to breathe during an underwater scene.

During an Entertainment Weekly “Lie v. Lie” interview, Stokes said the incident happened while the cast was filming in Barbados. Bailey’s character, Kiara, was holding Rudy Pankow’s JJ in the water after he was knocked from a boat.

Stokes said he noticed he could no longer see Bailey’s face and realized she had been underwater for too long. He jumped into the water and found that Bailey was unable to swim back toward the boat.

“I was like, ‘No, she’s drowning,’” Stokes recalled, explaining that others initially thought her struggle was part of the performance.

Bailey said the cast had already been treading water for about a minute before the director called action. She also joked that Stokes made the situation worse because he appeared to swim effortlessly while she struggled.

Stokes plays John B. Routledge, while Bailey plays Kiara Carrera in the Netflix series, which is ending with its recently released fifth season.
