Chase Stokes Takes on Gritty NASCAR Role in Thunder Road

After five seasons of Outer Banks, Chase Stokes is leaving behind his role as surfer John B. for a much tougher character.

The 33-year-old actor will star in AMC’s upcoming series Thunder Road, scheduled for 2027. He plays Ronnie Whitlock, a rebellious NASCAR racer who is moved to the pit crew after causing trouble. Dennis Quaid also stars as Ronnie’s father, fictional racing legend Duane Whitlock.

Stokes said the role gives him a chance to move beyond the teenage characters he has played for years. He has grown a beard and changed his appearance to better fit Ronnie, whom he describes as a rear tire changer.

To prepare for the role, Stokes has focused on the demanding physical work of NASCAR pit crews. He said crew members need the strength, speed and athletic ability to change heavy tires and service a car within seconds.

The actor also spoke openly about struggling with body dysmorphia and the pressure that came with playing a frequently shirtless John B. He said online comments about his appearance affected his mental health and that he is relieved to move beyond the constant scrutiny.

With Thunder Road, Stokes said he wants to focus less on his appearance and more on his performance, calling the project an opportunity to “start fresh.”
