Crystal Harris Says Life With Hugh Hefner Left Her Feeling “Brainwashed” and Worthless

Crystal Harris, Hugh Hefner’s third and final wife, is opening up about the darker side of life inside the Playboy Mansion, saying she once felt so emotionally broken down that she believed she had nowhere else to go.

Harris made the comments Monday on Firerose’s podcast, No One Asked Her. Firerose, the former wife of singer Billy Ray Cyrus, said she could relate to Harris after previously describing her own experience in her marriage as “narcissistic abuse.”

Harris said she now believes she was “absolutely brainwashed” during her relationship with Hefner.

Hefner was about 60 years older than Harris, but while they were together, she often defended him publicly. She recalled describing him in interviews as being “like a kid” who simply enjoyed having fun.

“Looking back, I’m like, ‘Why did I say that?’” Harris said.

Harris became known to television audiences when she appeared on the final season of The Girls Next Door, the E! reality series that portrayed life at the Playboy Mansion. The show originally followed Hefner and his girlfriends Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson.

After the original cast members left, Harris became one of the central figures on the show. She married Hefner in 2012, and they remained together until his death in 2017 at age 91.

But Harris now says the reality behind the mansion’s glamorous image was very different from what viewers saw on television.

She described feeling increasingly isolated and convinced that something was wrong with her because Hefner was widely celebrated in the media.

“All of the media put Hef on such a pedestal,” Harris said. “I’m like, ‘Okay, if they all see him as this larger-than-life amazing human, there must be something wrong with me.’”

Harris said she eventually felt “broken down” and believed she was “damaged goods.” She questioned where she could go if she left the relationship and said she had come to feel worthless.

“I just felt like trash, to be honest,” she said.

Her comments echo accounts from other women who were involved with Hefner and the Playboy Mansion. Madison, one of the original stars of The Girls Next Door, has also spoken about how difficult it was to leave.

In the 2022 docuseries Secrets of Playboy, Madison said she feared that leaving could lead to revenge porn being released. She also said she believed she was in love with Hefner at the time.

Hefner remained a highly controversial figure throughout his life, and allegations about his behavior continued to emerge after his death. Former Playmate Susie Krabacher, among others, made allegations against him in Secrets of Playboy.

Harris has since written about her own experiences in her 2024 memoir, Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself. She has also recently said she regrets marrying Hefner.

For Harris, leaving the relationship was not an immediate decision. She said it took time to recognize what was happening, rebuild her confidence and believe she could create a life outside the world she had known.

Her story offers a stark contrast to the polished television image of the Playboy Mansion, showing how a life that appeared glamorous to outsiders could feel deeply isolating to the women living inside it.
