Dakota Fanning Still Cringes Over Her Adorable 2002 Critics Choice Awards Speech

Dakota Fanning is still amused—and slightly embarrassed—by one of her most memorable award-show moments.

In 2002, Fanning was just 7 years old when she won Best Young Actor at the Critics Choice Awards for her performance in I Am Sam. When she reached the stage to accept the award, she was too short to reach the microphone. Presenter Orlando Bloom stepped in and lifted her up so she could deliver her speech.

Fanning recently recalled the moment on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, calling the speech perhaps her “peak achievement” and saying people still make her watch it.

She admitted that she sometimes tries to escape when friends or family play the clip. Fanning also remembers being surprised by how many people she thanked, including God and her agents, before acknowledging her parents and younger sister, Elle.

Despite her embarrassment, Fanning said she loves the moment and still reenacts it with Bloom whenever they meet. She joked that the Critics Choice Awards should bring them together to recreate the scene at a future ceremony.
