Director Reveals Britney Spears Received Breakup Text From Justin Timberlake on Music Video Set

Britney Spears turned personal heartbreak into one of her most memorable music video performances, according to director Chris Applebaum.

Speaking on the Hyperfixated with Joseph Shepherd podcast, Applebaum recalled that while filming the 2002 video for the Darkchild remix of "Overprotected," Spears learned that her boyfriend of more than two years, Justin Timberlake, had ended their relationship via text message.

After finding the singer visibly upset in her trailer, Applebaum told Spears he would understand if she wanted to stop filming. Instead, he encouraged her to channel her emotions into the performance, suggesting she "show him he just messed up the best thing that he's ever had."

The advice resonated with Spears, who returned to the set and delivered what Applebaum described as an unforgettable performance, particularly during the song's bridge.

The emotional shoot also left an impression on choreographer Brian Friedman, who became emotional after watching the finished video. Friedman later received an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Choreography, a recognition Applebaum said he was thrilled to see.
