Ewan McGregor Reflects on Trainspotting and His Career in Scotland

Ewan McGregor returned to Scotland this week to mark the 30th anniversary of Trainspotting at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Speaking at a packed event in Edinburgh, McGregor discussed the 1996 film that made him a star, his work in Star Wars, his family and his hopes of making a film in Scotland. He was joined for the anniversary celebrations by Trainspotting co-star Ewan Bremner, producer Andrew Macdonald, screenwriter John Hodge and author Irvine Welsh.

McGregor said the criticism directed at the Star Wars prequel trilogy taught him not to worry too much about negative reactions. He also said he would like to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again after being surprised by the strong response to the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The actor became emotional while discussing Bleeding Love, the 2023 film he made with his daughter Clara. The film explores the relationship between a father and daughter dealing with addiction. McGregor said making it came during a difficult period for their family but helped explore the repair of their relationship.

He also spoke about directing, his motorcycle documentary series Long Way..., and his desire to make a film in Scotland. Asked about playing James Bond, McGregor joked that he had not heard his name mentioned in current discussions about the role, adding that he would have enjoyed playing the famous spy.

McGregor also revealed that he and longtime friend Charley Boorman plan to travel across the Atlantic on a vintage Oyster yacht in the coming weeks.

The 2026 Edinburgh International Film Festival runs from August 13 to 19.
