Geno Segers Will No Longer Join Broadway’s "Hadestown"

Actor Geno Segers will no longer join the Broadway cast of Hadestown, just days after he was announced to play Hades.

The show's producers said Sunday that they and Segers had "mutually agreed" that he would not be part of the production. A replacement will be announced later.

The decision follows renewed attention to old online videos and comments in which Segers criticized pronoun use, made remarks viewed as anti-transgender, and reportedly opposed transgender athletes competing in women's sports. After the backlash, Segers made his Instagram account private and removed videos from his YouTube channel.

The new principal cast will begin performances on Sept. 1 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The lineup includes Kayko as Orpheus, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Eurydice, Norbert Leo Butz as Hermes, and Amber Iman as Persephone.

Written by Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown blends the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice with Hades and Persephone through folk and jazz-inspired music. The musical opened on Broadway in 2019 and debuted in London's West End in 2024. A filmed version of the stage production was released in theaters for a limited run on July 24.
