Gwyneth Paltrow Postpones Planned Dinner for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

Gwyneth Paltrow has postponed a private dinner she planned to host for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at her home in Amagansett, New York, following criticism of the event.

The dinner was scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, according to a source who spoke to PEOPLE. The source said the gathering was postponed because of the backlash and may not take place.

The planned dinner first drew attention earlier this month after Puck reported that Paltrow intended to host an intimate, off-the-record evening in Altman’s honor. The invitation circulated online and sparked criticism, particularly because of Hollywood’s growing concerns about artificial intelligence and its potential impact on creative jobs.

Some critics on social media called Paltrow’s decision “tone-deaf,” while comedian and activist Matt Bernstein criticized her ties to the technology industry.

Paltrow responded to the controversy with humor, posting altered versions of the invitation on Instagram featuring fictional guests such as Shrek, M3GAN and Jessica Rabbit. She also joked about the dinner menu.

The backlash has reportedly affected Altman as OpenAI works to strengthen its relationships with people in the entertainment industry. A source said Altman does not want to be viewed negatively in Hollywood.

Paltrow has invested in AI companies and has discussed emerging technology through her Goop business and podcast. Altman, meanwhile, has increasingly sought connections outside Silicon Valley as OpenAI expands its presence in the entertainment and cultural sectors.

Neither Paltrow nor OpenAI had publicly confirmed the dinner before reports that it had been postponed.
