Bill Maher Faces Backlash Over Dolly Parton Joke

Bill Maher is facing criticism after making a joke about Dolly Parton’s breasts during his first “Real Time” monologue since the country music icon’s death.

During the program, Maher discussed the widespread public tributes to Parton, noting that landmarks around the world had been illuminated in her honor. He then joked that the Sphere in Las Vegas had added “a nipple,” referring to Parton’s famously prominent appearance.

The remark quickly drew criticism online, with some calling it an insensitive way to address Parton’s death. Variety described it as the “lamest Dolly Parton tribute yet.”

Parton’s representatives previously confirmed that the singer died after a brief battle with cancer. She was widely remembered for her music, philanthropy and efforts to bring people together.

Parton had openly discussed her appearance throughout her career. In 2014, she joked that while her breasts and hair were artificial, her voice and heart were real.

The backlash to Maher’s comments included a brief response from actress and comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who called the remark “heartless.” The Tennessee Holler, a progressive media outlet, also criticized Maher, calling him an “absolute asshole.”

Parton received tributes from figures across the political and entertainment worlds following her death. President Donald Trump also honored her, writing on Truth Social that there had “never been anyone like her, and never will.”

The controversy has renewed debate over whether Maher’s style of political and cultural humor crossed a line in addressing the death of a widely admired public figure.
