Jelly Roll Reflects on Grammys Political Question

Jelly Roll says he wishes he had spoken differently when he was asked about immigration and the state of the world after winning his first Grammy earlier this year.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, the 41-year-old singer became emotional as he explained why he avoided giving a direct answer at the Grammys. He said he was afraid his comments would be viewed as a political statement.

“At the time, I fumbled my words,” Jelly Roll said. He added that while he does not regret asking for more time before speaking, he wishes he had found the words to express his feelings sooner.

The singer said he has spent much of his career avoiding political parties and political labels. However, he said he now plans to vote and wants to use his platform to support people who are hurting.

Jelly Roll said he had an opportunity at the Grammys to speak for people who were “scared” and “hurting,” but felt he failed to do so.

He emphasized that compassion and human dignity should not be tied to political parties. He also said the American dream should be available to everyone, not just people with backgrounds similar to his.

Looking back, Jelly Roll said he wishes he had simply reminded people to “love your neighbor,” regardless of where they were born or their political views.

“I just want us to remember that the person across the street from us is a human being before they’re a voter,” he said. “And what I wanna ask of myself is to defend human dignity even when it can cost me something.”
