Speaking with Ted Danson on his “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast, Sagal, 72, reflected on getting sober in 1986, shortly before she began her iconic role as Peg Bundy on “Married... With Children.”
Sagal said her life before recovery had become “very, very small,” as she struggled with rigid expectations about how her career and personal life should unfold. When those expectations were not met, she said, drinking and drug use became a way to escape.
“I thought it had to be this way,” she recalled, describing how recovery eventually challenged that mindset.
Sagal said she initially doubted claims that sobriety could lead to a better life. But decades later, she sees how profoundly her outlook changed. She went on to build a successful television career, raise three children, marry “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter and take on roles in shows including “8 Simple Rules,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “The Conners” and “Futurama.”
“Recovery is all about, you know, don’t leave before the miracle,” Sagal said. “My life is pretty big in a great way.”
Sagal has previously spoken about struggling with drugs and alcohol throughout her 20s. As a teenager, she was prescribed diet pills and later used them alongside substances including LSD, cocaine, marijuana and alcohol. She credits meeting a woman in recovery while working on a set with inspiring her own decision to get sober.
For Sagal, recovery ultimately proved to be less about giving up her ambitions and more about discovering possibilities she had never imagined.
