Kelly Clarkson Bans Her Kids From Watching Her “From Justin to Kelly” Movie

Kelly Clarkson has made one thing clear: her children will not be watching one of the most awkward projects from her early career anytime soon.

During her final Las Vegas concert on Saturday, the singer joked about her 2003 musical comedy “From Justin to Kelly,” which she starred in alongside Justin Guarini. Clarkson said she has banned her daughter, River Rose, 12, and son, Remington, 10, from watching the movie.

Clarkson, 44, became the first winner of “American Idol” in 2002. Soon after her victory, she was required to make the movie with Guarini, the show’s first-season runner-up.

“I didn’t know that if you won, you had to do a movie,” Clarkson told the audience, according to Us Weekly. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to be in a movie,’ but they were like, ‘Yeah, but you won.’”

The singer joked that she should have paid closer attention to the contract, saying she felt less like a winner and more like someone who had unexpectedly been handed a movie role.

“From Justin to Kelly” follows two young people who meet and fall in love during spring break. The film was released in 2003, but it was poorly received by critics and has since become one of the more infamous moments in Clarkson’s career.

More than 20 years later, Clarkson is still not a fan.

When a fan at the concert defended the movie, Clarkson joked that they were watching it with “loving eyes.” She then gave her own blunt review of the film.

“It’s s—,” she said.

That is also why her children apparently will not be seeing it. Clarkson told the crowd that she has “banned” them from watching the movie, suggesting she would rather keep that chapter of her career in the past.

Still, Clarkson said the experience did have one bright spot: the music.

“The music part, that was fun,” she said, adding that people have to find the positive in bad experiences and “turn that s— into lemonade.”

For Clarkson, “From Justin to Kelly” may remain a movie she would rather forget, but the singer has clearly learned to laugh about the experience more than two decades later.
