Ken Jennings Admits Some ‘Jeopardy!’ Stories Weren’t True

Ken Jennings has admitted that some of the personal stories he shared during his record-breaking run on Jeopardy! were not completely true.

Jennings appeared on the quiz show for 74 consecutive games in 2004. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 52-year-old said he sometimes made up or exaggerated anecdotes to give host Alex Trebek something interesting to discuss during the show.

“I didn’t feel like I had a great story in game number three, much less game number 73,” Jennings said. He joked that he once claimed to like airline food and even told Trebek he had “killed a man down south once,” although neither story was true.

Jennings said contestants are not expected to provide thoroughly fact-checked personal stories. He explained that a good Jeopardy! anecdote should be unusual and memorable, even if it sounds ordinary at first.

Jennings also discussed Jamie Ding, who won 31 consecutive games in 2026 and earned $882,605. He said he was rooting for Ding and believed the champion had a chance to break his own record.

Jennings said Jeopardy! has remained popular because it appeals to people across generations and political backgrounds. He added that the show gives viewers a place where “facts actually matter” and where knowledge and expertise are valued.
