Lil Nas X Announces Death of Mother Tameka Hill

Rapper Lil Nas X has announced the death of his mother, Tameka Hill.

The Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Montero Hill, shared the news on Instagram Saturday, posting photos of his mother and writing, “RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt.”

A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Lil Nas X has previously spoken publicly about his complicated relationship with his mother, including her struggles with addiction. In 2020, he told Variety that he had tried to help her enter rehab but said their relationship remained difficult despite the challenges.

He later addressed their strained relationship and her addiction in the song “DEAD RIGHT NOW,” from his 2021 debut album, MONTERO.

The loss comes as Lil Nas X has also been dealing with his own mental health challenges. In June, he said on Instagram that he had spent several months in rehab and was focusing on his recovery and spending time with family and friends.

The rapper was arrested in Los Angeles in August 2025 and faced charges including battery against a police officer and resisting an executive officer. In March, he entered a mental health diversion program. His case is expected to be dropped if he completes treatment and follows the program’s requirements for two years.

His father, Robert Stafford, previously said the pressures of fame, family responsibilities and his inability to change his mother’s situation had placed a heavy emotional burden on the artist.
