Mariska Hargitay Steps Into the Spotlight After Christopher Meloni’s SVU Exit

Mariska Hargitay became the leading presence on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” after Christopher Meloni left the show in 2011.

Ice-T, who plays Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, told Variety that Meloni was initially the dominant figure on set. “Chris was number 1,” he said, while Hargitay was “number 2.” Meloni often had notes on scenes and helped guide the production.

After Meloni’s departure, Hargitay had to step into that role. She told Variety that she was not naturally as vocal and that there were questions about whether she could carry the series. “Sometimes you don’t step up until there’s a space,” she said.

Hargitay also said she tried to prevent Meloni from leaving because she did not want him to go. Despite his departure, the two actors remained close friends. Meloni said their friendship was built on humor and a willingness to challenge each other.

Meloni later returned to the “Law & Order” franchise, appearing on “SVU” and starring in “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” which ended after five seasons.

There may be another reunion ahead. Producer Peter Jankowski said Meloni has met with current “SVU” showrunner Michele Fazekas, but no return has been confirmed.

“Law & Order: SVU” is scheduled to return for its 28th season on NBC on Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. ET.
