Matthew McConaughey’s First Acting Role Helped Catch a Murderer

Matthew McConaughey may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars today, but his first acting job was far more important than he probably realized at the time.

More than 30 years ago, McConaughey appeared on the true-crime television series Unsolved Mysteries. His brief role helped bring attention to a murder case—and, according to the actor, helped authorities catch the suspect.

McConaughey recently recalled the story during a conversation ahead of a screening of his latest movie, The Rivals of Amziah King, at the Filmland festival in Little Rock, Arkansas.

“I’m gonna toot my own horn a little bit,” McConaughey joked. “The Unsolved Mysteries episode I did? They caught the guy weeks later—based on what I did.”

The episode, which aired in 1992, focused on the murder of Larry Dickens, a Marine and resident of Pasadena, Texas. McConaughey played Dickens in a reenactment of the events leading to his death.

In 1978, Dickens confronted Edward Harold Bell after Bell allegedly exposed himself to children. The confrontation turned deadly when Bell shot and killed Dickens.

Bell was arrested but later released on bail. He failed to appear for his trial in January 1979 and fled the United States, eventually spending years in Mexico and Central America.

The case received renewed attention when Unsolved Mysteries aired its reenactment. Two viewers later recognized Bell after encountering him in Panama and reported what they knew.

In February 1993, less than three months after the episode aired, Bell was arrested on a yacht in Panama City by Panamanian authorities working with the FBI.

Bell was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to 70 years in prison. He died behind bars in 2019.

McConaughey’s performance involved a dramatic death scene. A producer later recalled the role in the documentary Unsolved Mysteries: Behind the Legacy, joking that while McConaughey’s acting has come a long way, he had to tackle a “fairly robust death scene” even in his early career.

McConaughey was not the only future star to get an early break on the series. Actors including Cheryl Hines, Daniel Dae Kim, Stephanie Weir and Taran Killam also appeared on Unsolved Mysteries before becoming better known.

The story also highlights the unusual real-world impact of the long-running show. According to its creators, viewers have helped solve more than 260 cases, leading to more than 180 criminals being brought to justice and helping reunite more than 100 families.

For McConaughey, his first acting credit was more than just an early Hollywood job. His performance became part of a television reenactment that helped put a fugitive murderer back in the spotlight—and ultimately contributed to his capture.
