Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Julie Andrews’ Absence From The Princess Diaries 3

Anne Hathaway says making The Princess Diaries 3 without Julie Andrews will be difficult, especially because of the special bond the two actresses have shared since the original 2001 film.

Andrews, now 90, recently confirmed that she will not appear in the long-awaited third movie. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of her Disney Legends induction at D23, Hathaway said she will miss Andrews’ warmth, humor and kindness when production begins.

“She’s so warm and she’s so gracious and she’s so funny,” Hathaway said. She added that Andrews’ “sense of humor” is what she will miss most on set.

Hathaway also praised Andrews for the way she makes people feel around her. “She brings magic with her wherever she goes,” Hathaway said, describing her former co-star as “this amazing love conductor.”

Hathaway first worked with Andrews when she was just 17 years old. In The Princess Diaries, Hathaway played Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary teenager who discovers that she is actually the heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Genovia. Andrews played Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

The actresses reunited for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004. The first movie earned more than $165 million worldwide, while the sequel brought in about $135 million.

Andrews recently told Today that she will “not be in” the third movie. Her absence marks a major change for the franchise, but Hathaway remains committed to bringing the story back to the big screen.

The project has faced delays in recent years. Hathaway previously explained that The Devil Wears Prada 2 unexpectedly became a major priority while she was trying to move forward with The Princess Diaries 3. Filming the two projects at the same time proved impossible, she said.

During her Disney Legends induction at the D23 convention in Anaheim, California, Hathaway also paid tribute to Andrews. She recalled how much she learned from the veteran actress during the making of the first Princess Diaries film.

“How lucky am I that my first studio picture ever starred perhaps the greatest Disney Legend of all time, the incomparable Julie Andrews,” Hathaway told the audience.

Hathaway said Andrews taught her the importance of kindness, patience and hard work, qualities that have stayed with her throughout her career.

While Andrews will not return, Hathaway’s continued involvement keeps hope alive for fans who have waited more than two decades for another chapter in Mia Thermopolis’ story. The film’s release date and full cast details have yet to be announced.
