According to the Greenville Police Department, officers and EMS personnel responded at about 1:50 p.m. to a report of an “unresponsive female.” The woman was later identified as Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise.
A friend of the actress reportedly made the 911 call, according to TMZ, citing law enforcement sources. The caller’s identity has not been publicly released.
Reports indicate that first responders attempted to revive Panettiere. TMZ reported that emergency personnel used advanced cardiac life support, including CPR and other emergency measures. However, authorities have not independently confirmed those specific details.
Panettiere was reportedly pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. Dispatch audio obtained by PEOPLE reportedly included references to a possible overdose and cardiac arrest. A representative for Panettiere told PEOPLE that they did not have additional information but said it appeared that an overdose may have been involved.
Authorities have stressed that the investigation is still ongoing. The Greenville Police Department said its preliminary investigation has found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death will not be determined until an autopsy and further investigation are completed, police told PEOPLE.
Panettiere began acting as a child, appearing on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live in 1994. She later became widely known for playing Claire Bennet on Heroes and Juliette Barnes on Nashville. She also appeared in several films in the Scream series.
She is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former fiancé and professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
The circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death remain under investigation, and authorities have not yet released an official cause of death.
