Nick Jonas Reveals He Bombed His Frozen Audition

Nick Jonas is looking back at one of his more memorable failed auditions: a chance to play Kristoff in Disney’s hit animated movie Frozen.

The 33-year-old actor and singer shared the story on the Hey Jonas! podcast, where he was joined by Frozen stars Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Idina Menzel.

“I auditioned for Frozen,” Jonas revealed, surprising the group. He had auditioned for the role of Kristoff, the ice harvester who becomes Anna’s love interest.

But things went wrong almost immediately.

When the casting team asked what song he had prepared, Jonas admitted that he had no idea. He also did not bring sheet music because, he said, no one had told him he needed it.

Jonas then picked a musical theater song at the last minute. Looking back, he did not have much confidence in his performance.

“And I bombed the audition. It was terrible,” he said.

Bell jokingly responded, “That must have been why you didn’t get it,” prompting laughter from the group.

Josh Gad also joined in on the joke, suggesting that Jonas might have had “such better chemistry” with Bell than Jonathan Groff, who ultimately won the role.

Jonas may not have made it into the movie, but he said he and his brothers are big fans of Frozen. He also made it clear that he did not watch the film simply because he had lost the role.

Groff went on to voice Kristoff in the 2013 original and returned for Frozen II in 2019 alongside Bell as Anna, Menzel as Elsa and Gad as Olaf.

The Frozen story is set to continue with Frozen 3, which is expected to arrive in theaters in November 2027. A fourth film is also reportedly in development.

Gad previously teased the next chapter during an appearance on The View in 2023, saying he had heard some details about what was coming and describing them as “pretty mind-blowing” and exciting.

For Jonas, the story is now less about the role he missed and more about a funny audition experience that happened before Frozen became one of Disney’s biggest franchises.
