'Practical Magic 2' Stars Say Set Stayed Spook-Free Despite Supernatural Theme

Joey King and Maisie Williams say they took a few spiritual precautions while filming Practical Magic 2, but neither experienced anything supernatural on set.

Speaking to PEOPLE at Teen Vogue Fest in Brooklyn on July 25, King revealed she felt uneasy during one scene and later cleansed herself with sage. "Nothing happened," she said afterward. Williams added that while she regularly used tarot cards and smudging during filming, she also had no unusual experiences.

The comments follow director Griffin Dunne's earlier claim that the original 1998 Practical Magic production was briefly overshadowed by a dispute with a real-life witch hired as a consultant. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, Dunne alleged she left him a voicemail containing a curse after a disagreement over compensation, prompting Warner Bros. to settle the matter.

King and Williams said joining the sequel carried a sense of responsibility because they were longtime fans of the original film. They praised returning stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman for making them feel welcome, with Williams describing Bullock as "the nicest woman in Hollywood."

In Practical Magic 2, Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens. King and Williams play Sally's daughters, Kylie and Antonia Owens, who become entangled in their family's magical legacy.

Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to open in theaters on Sept. 11.
