Ricky Schroder Faces Backlash Over Dolly Parton Tribute

Actor Ricky Schroder is facing criticism after posting a tribute to Dolly Parton that also criticized her support for transgender people and COVID-19 vaccines.

Schroder shared a photo of himself with Parton on Instagram after news of her death broke. He wrote that although he disagreed with her views on transgender rights and vaccines, he “Loved her anyway.” He also thanked Parton for choosing him to play her father in the TV movies Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors and Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love.

The post quickly drew criticism. Broadcaster Katie Couric responded, “Ick,” while rock band Garbage told Schroder to “F--- off.” Singer Boy George also commented, “Oh shut up.”

Critics accused Schroder of using Parton’s death to highlight political disagreements rather than simply honoring her. Schroder’s social media accounts have frequently featured conservative political content.

Parton was widely known for supporting LGBTQ+ people and promoting inclusion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she donated $1 million to vaccine research that helped support the development of the Moderna vaccine.

GLAAD praised Parton after her death, calling her “the queen of inclusivity and philanthropy” and highlighting her longstanding support for LGBTQ+ people.
