Rufus Sewell Embraces Long-Term TV Role After Years of Avoiding It

Rufus Sewell says his long-standing reluctance to commit to a long-running television series has changed thanks to Netflix's The Diplomat. After completing production on season four, the actor said he would be happy to continue with the political drama for several more years, despite previously fearing the security and commitment of ongoing TV work.

Sewell plays Hal Wyler opposite Keri Russell's Kate Wyler in the acclaimed series. His performance in season three earned him his first Emmy nomination for Lead Actor, while the show also received recognition in writing and other categories.

Reflecting on the show's growing success, Sewell said audiences took time to appreciate its mix of political intrigue, character-driven storytelling and complex relationships.

Season three saw Hal become U.S. vice president, creating new tension in his marriage to Kate. Sewell said the shift in their relationship helped keep the series fresh and avoided repeating familiar storylines.

The actor also revealed that he asks creator Debora Cahn to share major character secrets in advance so he can better portray Hal's hidden motives. He rejects the idea that Hal is simply a villain, describing him as an ambitious man who genuinely believes he is trying to do the right thing, even as he makes morally questionable choices.

Looking ahead, Sewell confirmed that season four will expand the role of Bradley Whitford's Todd Penn and further explore the contrasting marriages at the heart of the series, while continuing to balance political drama with humor.
