Hylands died on July 29, according to his son, Luke Hylands. He had been living on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia and was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2021.
Born on Feb. 27, 1943, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Hylands studied at the University of British Columbia before beginning his acting career in New York. He made his film debut in Daddy’s Gone a-Hunting (1969) and spent the 1970s appearing in films including Earthquake and The Boys in Company C, as well as numerous U.S. television series.
His best-known role came in Night Heat, where he starred alongside Jeff Wincott as veteran detective O’Brien. The series, which aired from 1985 to 1989, was the first Canadian-produced original drama to air simultaneously in the United States.
After Night Heat, Hylands continued acting in popular television shows such as NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Once Upon a Time, Wynonna Earp, and Fargo, where he played Ennis Stussy in the third season.
Hylands is survived by his wife of 36 years, Veronica, his son Luke, and his daughter Rebecca. Former co-star Jeff Wincott remembered him as a dedicated professional who had a lasting influence on his career.
