Shannon Elizabeth Reflects on Controversial ‘American Pie’ Scene: ‘It Would Have Gone Down Differently’

Shannon Elizabeth is revisiting one of the most memorable scenes from her breakthrough role in 1999’s American Pie, which has faced renewed criticism over the years.

Elizabeth played Nadia, a Czech exchange student who is secretly filmed while changing clothes by Jim, played by Jason Biggs. The footage is broadcast to students at the school without her knowledge, eventually leading to Nadia being sent back to Europe.

Speaking to Variety, Elizabeth said she still has positive feelings about the film and its impact on her career. “I love American Pie. It meant a lot for my life and my career,” she said, adding that she does not look back at the movie negatively.

However, she acknowledged that the scene would likely be viewed differently today. In a 2019 interview with Page Six, she said the scene would have faced problems if it had been released after the #MeToo movement.

Biggs has expressed a similar view. In a 2020 interview with BuzzFeed News, he said the scene “wouldn’t get made now” and that its depiction of the situation would be considered unacceptable today.

Elizabeth said changing attitudes toward comedy and sexual content have affected what filmmakers are willing to make. Still, she believes audiences may eventually embrace more provocative comedy again as people seek greater connection.

American Pie became a major success and helped launch Elizabeth’s acting career after her work as a professional model.
