Cruise will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, while Hathaway will play a team owner and engineer. Cruise will also produce the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.
Jonathan Levine, known for 50/50, Warm Bodies and Long Shot, will direct from a screenplay by Will Staples. The film will be shot for IMAX and is scheduled to open in theaters on June 2, 2028.
Paramount also released a photo of Cruise and Hathaway at Daytona International Speedway standing beside a green racecar. The actors announced the project in a video shared on their social media accounts.
The original Days of Thunder, directed by Tony Scott, starred Cruise alongside Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Michael Rooker and Cary Elwes. The film also featured Nicole Kidman in her first on-screen pairing with Cruise.
The new project reunites Cruise with Paramount and Bruckheimer following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed more than $1.5 billion worldwide and received a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
Cruise’s upcoming film Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is set for release on Oct. 2. Hathaway, meanwhile, has several projects in the works, including Verity, Alone at Dawn and Disney’s The Princess Diaries 3.
