Tony Romo Could Return to CBS Sports After OWI Arrest

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS Sports NFL analyst Tony Romo could return to the network after being placed on leave following an OWI arrest in July.

Romo was arrested July 23 in Milwaukee after a sheriff’s deputy stopped him for allegedly drifting between lanes and making an unsafe pass. Police said he performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail and later released.

Court records show Romo now faces citations for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right, and having an open intoxicant in his vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21.

Romo’s representative said he “accepts full responsibility for his actions” and is working with authorities to resolve the matter. The representative also said Romo and his team are communicating with CBS about his future.

CBS placed Romo on leave July 31. JJ Watt has been filling in alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on the network’s lead NFL broadcast team.

CBS Sports president David Berson said Aug. 11 that the network was still assessing the situation and considering its impact on CBS’s image and brand. He also noted that the network has other experienced analysts available.

Romo spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys from 2004 to 2017 before joining CBS Sports as an analyst.
