Wynonna Judd Opens Up About Her Father in New Song

Wynonna Judd is opening up about the pain of never knowing her biological father in her new song, “Girl Who Could Sing.”

The song was inspired by Charles Jordan, Judd’s biological father, whom she never met. After Jordan died in 2000, his family found newspaper clippings about Judd and the Judds in a desk drawer. Judd later learned that Jordan was her biological father when she was 30.

Judd was raised believing Michael Ciminella, her mother Naomi Judd’s former husband, was her father. Learning the truth changed how she understood her identity, she said. By the time she was ready to meet Jordan, he had died, leaving her with unanswered questions.

The song asks whether Jordan ever truly saw her as his daughter or simply as “a girl who could sing.” In its music video, Judd looks through old photographs, newspaper articles and notebooks in a worn-down room.

“Girl Who Could Sing” will appear on Judd’s new album, The Hard Truth, which is scheduled for release October 2 on ANTI-Records. Produced by her husband, Cactus Moser, the album explores personal experiences and difficult moments in Judd’s life.

The album is her first since the death of her mother, Naomi, who died by suicide in April 2022 at age 76. Wynonna and Naomi performed together for years as the country duo the Judds.

Following performances in Kentucky and at AmericanaFest in Nashville, Judd will begin a nationwide tour on October 8 in New York City, with the final show scheduled for November 21 in Gary, Indiana.
