Galliano announced the decision Monday, saying that after discussions with the Met and organizers, he believed it was “best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.”
“I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it,” Galliano said.
He added that meaningful atonement requires an ongoing commitment to listening, learning and changing one’s conduct, rather than a single public gesture or institutional honor.
Vogue global editorial director Anna Wintour, who had supported the decision to honor Galliano, called his withdrawal “very courageous” and said she believed it was the right decision. She also expressed her support for Galliano and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The planned exhibition had sparked controversy after Galliano was announced as the honoree for the 2027 Met Gala. The designer faced renewed scrutiny over a 2011 incident in Paris in which he was filmed making antisemitic and racist remarks while intoxicated. The incident led to his dismissal from Dior and a period away from the fashion industry.
Galliano later entered rehabilitation and returned to fashion in 2014 as creative director of Maison Margiela.
Before the exhibition was announced, Galliano and Wintour reportedly met with influential rabbis and Jewish leaders in New York. Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said the organization had accepted Galliano’s apology and believed he had genuinely confronted his past antisemitism, but stressed that the timing of the exhibition was important amid rising antisemitism.
The 2027 exhibition will no longer proceed at this time, following Galliano’s decision to step back from the planned honor.
