Ariana Grande Changes ‘Thank U, Next’ Lyrics to Hint at Ricky Alvarez Marriage

Ariana Grande appeared to hint that she wants to marry Ricky Alvarez during the final stop of her Eternal Sunshine tour in London on Tuesday.

While performing her 2019 hit “Thank U, Next,” Grande changed the lyrics from “Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh” to “Wrote some songs about Ricky, I’m trynna make him my last.”

The lyric change refers to Alvarez, whom Grande dated from 2015 to 2016. The pair have since reconnected following Grande’s breakup with actor Ethan Slater earlier this year.

Grande has made similar changes to the song during recent performances. At her birthday show in Texas in June, she sang, “Wrote some songs about Ricky, I know he’s still got my back.” During a July performance in New York, she changed the line to, “Wrote some songs about Ricky, we always find our way back.”

Grande previously described her relationship with Alvarez as happy in a 2016 interview with Billboard.

Her relationship with Slater followed her separation from Dalton Gomez and Slater’s split from Lilly Jay. Grande married Gomez in May 2021, and they separated in February 2023.

Following the conclusion of the tour, Grande’s team announced that she would take a break from public appearances. Grande later addressed concerns from fans about the decision, saying that people can need a break while also enjoying their work.

“Multiple things can be true at the same time,” she said, adding that “boundaries need to be set.”

Grande is next scheduled to appear in the comedy sequel Focker-In-Law in November.
