Elizabeth Holmes Opens Up in New Documentary Trailer

Elizabeth Holmes, the former Theranos CEO serving a prison sentence for fraud, is at the center of a new documentary that promises an unusual look at her life before and during her time behind bars.

The trailer for A24’s You Can See Everything was released Sunday, Sept. 6, ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The documentary is expected to arrive in theaters in October.

In the trailer, Holmes is seen sitting on a couch at home and speaking with filmmaker Nathan Fielder. The conversation quickly turns to whether she can be trusted.

“I’m not that person, I can promise you that,” Holmes tells Fielder. “I don’t have anything to deceive you on.”

She goes on to say that she is speaking to him “as a human being” and asks why she would have any reason to deceive him.

“Okay. Alright. Okay, good chat … You’re being real right now?” Fielder asks.

“I’m always being real,” Holmes responds.

The camera then pulls back, revealing her young daughter sitting nearby in a baby bouncer.

Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, have two children. Their son, William Holmes Evans, was born in July 2021. Their daughter, Invicta — a name that means “invincible” in Latin — was born in 2023.

A closer look at Holmes before prison

The documentary begins just 34 days before Holmes was scheduled to report to prison, according to its official synopsis.

“Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, notorious Silicon Valley founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move,” the synopsis says.

What follows, according to the filmmakers, becomes a three-year project examining Holmes, her public image and the events surrounding the collapse of Theranos.

The film was directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Fielder spoke about the documentary following its surprise screening at Telluride.

“What I am really excited about is for you to see the movie and tell me what I experienced,” Fielder said during a Q&A, according to Deadline. “I don’t know why they wanted me there. Why am I there?”

From Silicon Valley star to convicted fraudster

Holmes became one of Silicon Valley’s most famous entrepreneurs after founding Theranos and claiming that her company had developed technology capable of running hundreds of medical tests using only a few drops of blood.

The company attracted billions of dollars in investment and made Holmes a household name. But investigations later revealed that the technology did not work as advertised.

Holmes was convicted of fraud and conspiracy and sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. She began serving her sentence on May 30, 2023. Her sentence was later reduced for good behavior, and she is currently incarcerated at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas.

Her expected release date is Dec. 30, 2031.

Holmes has continued to maintain her innocence. In an interview with PEOPLE in February 2025, her first major interview since her conviction, she spoke about the emotional impact of being separated from her children.

“It shatters her world,” she said of the separation.

Holmes also described prison as a surreal experience, saying that the intense public debate over her case has forced her to spend much of her time thinking about what people believe about her.

“It’s been hell and torture to be here,” she said.

Another look at the Theranos story

Holmes’ story has already been dramatized in Hulu’s 2022 miniseries The Dropout, with Amanda Seyfried playing the disgraced entrepreneur. Holmes previously told PEOPLE that watching the series was difficult.

Now, You Can See Everything offers a different perspective — one built around Holmes herself and filmed as she prepared to enter prison.

With its unusual access and Fielder’s involvement, the documentary could offer a fresh and potentially challenging look at one of the most controversial figures in modern Silicon Valley.

You Can See Everything is expected to be released in theaters in October.
