Oldman, who has played Jackson Lamb alongside Lowden in Apple TV+’s hit spy series since 2022, made the surprising comments during an interview with Canada’s The Morning Show.
“It’s been rumored that [Lowden] is on the shortlist,” Oldman said. “We’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we? Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.”
The comments have immediately sparked fresh speculation about Lowden’s chances of becoming the next 007. It is unclear, however, whether Oldman has inside information or was simply sharing his own belief about who should get the role.
Lowden has long been mentioned as a possible successor to Daniel Craig, who played Bond for five films before stepping away from the franchise in 2021’s No Time to Die. Other actors linked to the coveted role include Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harris Dickinson.
Amazon has yet to officially announce who will play Bond.
The next Bond movie is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind Dune and Dune: Part Two. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay.
The franchise is entering a new era after Amazon reached a deal with longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in February 2025, giving the studio full creative control of the character and the franchise’s intellectual property.
Adding another interesting twist to the speculation, Lowden’s wife, actor Saoirse Ronan, recently revealed that she would love to play a Bond villain.
“I said that I wanted to be a Bond villain and I’m dead serious,” Ronan told Empire while promoting her film Bad Apples.
“I want to go dark,” she added, explaining that she would be interested in playing a young female villain who could bring a different kind of energy to the franchise.
For now, Lowden’s Bond chances remain officially unconfirmed. But if Oldman is right, fans may not have to wait much longer to find out who will finally inherit Bond’s famous tuxedo.
