Jury Deadlocked in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial

A jury deciding the fate of Lindsay Clancy told a Massachusetts judge Tuesday that it was deadlocked after more than 17 hours of deliberations. The judge instructed jurors to return to deliberations and continue trying to reach a unanimous verdict.

Clancy is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of her three children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan. She does not dispute that she strangled the children but has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.

The defense argues that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was affected by overmedication when she killed the children at the family's Duxbury home in January 2023.

Prosecutors have argued that Clancy was not psychotic and that the killings were deliberate and premeditated. During closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague said Clancy was depressed and viewed her children as preventing her from ending her life.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy's mental health problems were not properly treated and that medical providers failed her despite her efforts to seek help.

The jury is considering charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and manslaughter.

The children were found by their father, Patrick Clancy, after he returned home and discovered Clancy outside the house following an apparent suicide attempt. Patrick, who has since forgiven his former wife, testified during the closely watched trial.

The trial lasted several weeks and included testimony from first responders, medical providers, family members and friends.
