The actor, who will celebrate his milestone birthday on Oct. 23, recently revealed that he would prefer to keep the occasion simple rather than throw a massive party.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Aug. 31 premiere of his new movie Mayday at the Lincoln Center AMC in New York City, Reynolds, 49, said he has never been a big fan of birthday celebrations.
“I don’t like birthdays. I mean, I’m fine with it,” Reynolds said. “I don’t bemoan a birthday, but I’m not like, ‘Hey, let’s have a huge party for me.’”
The Deadpool star joked that he already gets plenty of attention.
“I’m good. I get enough attention. I was just on a red carpet. This is plenty,” he said.
A busy time for the Reynolds-Lively family
Reynolds' comments come during an especially busy birthday season for his family.
His wife, actress Blake Lively, turned 39 on Aug. 25. Reynolds celebrated her birthday with a loving Instagram tribute, calling Lively “the very best human I know” and praising her kindness, intelligence and sense of humor.
The couple has four children, and several of their birthdays fall within a 113-day period. Their daughter Inez turns 10 in September, daughter Betty turns 7 in October, and eldest daughter James turns 12 in December. Their son Olin celebrates his fourth birthday in February.
The couple's wedding anniversary also falls during this busy stretch, on Sept. 9.
Reynolds jokingly described the period as “Birthday Alley,” saying the celebrations seem to come one after another and continue straight into Christmas.
“I’m in Birthday Alley. My kids, we have about four of our family members all just back-to-back to back-to-back,” he said. “It’s Birthday Alley, and it goes right on into Christmas. Ceaseless.”
When asked about his upcoming 50th birthday, Reynolds joked that he would likely spend the day doing the same thing he always does during the family’s birthday rush.
“Basically, yeah, to my 50th birthday. I mean, crazy,” he said. “I’m mostly breathing in helium all day, filling balloons, emptying balloons, filling more balloons. That is Birthday Alley.”
Reynolds is also promoting Mayday
While his 50th birthday is approaching, Reynolds is currently focused on his latest film, Mayday.
In the action-comedy, he plays a U.S. Navy fighter pilot whose plane crashes over Soviet Russia during a secret mission in 1987.
Mayday began streaming on Apple TV on Sept. 4.
For Reynolds, though, the biggest celebration this fall may not be his own birthday. With birthdays, an anniversary and Christmas all packed into a few months, the actor already has plenty of reasons to keep the balloons coming.
