Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Hathaway said she and her husband, Adam Shulman, were surprised the pregnancy happened.
"We knew what we were doing, but we were so shocked it worked," she joked. The couple now calls the baby their "buzzer-beater," comparing the pregnancy to a basketball shot made just before the final buzzer.
Hathaway and Shulman are already parents to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6. She has previously spoken publicly about a miscarriage in 2015 and the challenges she faced with fertility.
Host Seth Meyers, who has three children of his own, told Hathaway that parenting gets easier in some ways with a third child. He described it as going "on auto-pilot" and compared family life to watching a TV series with a new episode every day.
Hathaway laughed and said adding another child is like bringing "a new cast member" into the family. She announced her pregnancy on Instagram in June.
