Bruce Springsteen Says Criticizing the Government Is an Act of Patriotism

Bruce Springsteen says speaking out against the U.S. government is part of being a patriot.

In the PBS special Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song, the 76-year-old musician said he believes in "critical patriotism," arguing that loving a country means recognizing its flaws and working to make it better.

Springsteen has long been outspoken about politics and has repeatedly criticized President Donald Trump. During the 2024 presidential campaign, he endorsed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and called Trump "the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime."

On his recent Land of Hope and Dreams tour, Springsteen described the Trump administration as "corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous" and urged supporters of democracy to speak out against authoritarianism.

Trump responded on Truth Social by insulting the singer, criticizing his politics, and encouraging supporters to boycott his concerts.

Springsteen has said he is not concerned about losing fans because of his political views. He said his role is to express his opinions and accept that others are free to disagree.
