Dolly Parton musical set for Broadway debut this winter

A new Broadway musical based on the life of Dolly Parton will open at the St. James Theatre in New York after its world premiere in Nashville.

Dolly: A True Original Musical begins preview performances on Dec. 7, 2026, with its official opening on Jan. 19, 2027, which is Parton’s 81st birthday.

The production tells Parton’s life story in her own words through songs from her career, including I Will Always Love You, Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, and 9 to 5. It also features new music written by Parton.

Parton co-wrote the musical’s book with Maria S. Schlatter. Bartlett Sher directs the production, with a creative team that includes music supervisor Stephen Oremus and choreographer Mandy Moore. Casting details have not yet been announced.

In a statement, Parton said, “My whole life has been a musical... I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway.”

Fan and Capital One cardholder presales begin July 8 at 10 a.m. ET. General ticket sales open July 10 at 10 a.m. ET, with the first booking period running through Nov. 21.
