Emma Stone Won Crazy, Stupid, Love Role by Playfully Teasing Ryan Gosling

Emma Stone impressed the directors of Crazy, Stupid, Love during her audition by joking with Ryan Gosling after he forgot a line. Co-director Glenn Ficarra told PEOPLE that while many actresses became nervous when auditioning with Gosling, Stone stayed confident and quipped, "Oh, you're killing this. You're doing great."

The directors said her quick wit and natural chemistry with Gosling made it clear she was the right choice for the role of Hannah Weaver.

Ficarra also revealed that one of the film's most memorable bedroom scenes was largely improvised. The directors let Stone and Gosling spend hours chatting on camera, encouraging them to act naturally rather than stay strictly in character. Much of the final scene came from those unscripted conversations.

Stone and Gosling reunited five years later for La La Land, which earned Stone her first Academy Award for Best Actress and Gosling an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. The directors said their talent and on-screen chemistry were obvious from the start.
