First ransom note in Nancy Guthrie case reportedly warned Savannah Guthrie her mother's life was "in your hands"

New details have emerged about the first ransom note sent after the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC's Savannah Guthrie.

Nancy has been missing since Jan. 31. Investigators believe she was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home by a masked man captured on surveillance video near her front door.

Speaking on the Crime Junkie podcast, crime journalist Briana Whitney said the first note claimed Nancy was alive and demanded a multimillion-dollar ransom. According to Whitney, the note said Nancy was "safe but scared" and would be released after payment.

The note reportedly demanded $4 million in bitcoin by Feb. 5, with the amount increasing to $6 million if payment was not made by Feb. 9. It also threatened to kill Nancy if the final deadline passed, telling Savannah that her mother's life "is in your hands."

Whitney said the note included details from inside Nancy's home, including the location of a white smartwatch and damage to a backyard floodlight. The FBI is investigating whether the note is authentic. The Pima County Sheriff's Department, which is leading the case, said it has no additional information to provide.

A second ransom note, reported by NBC News in June, claimed that Nancy had died but did not request money or offer to return her body.

Savannah Guthrie has publicly appealed for information about her mother's disappearance, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to contact authorities. She has also spoken about the emotional toll on her family, saying they continue to live in uncertainty while hoping for answers.
