In his 2019 comedy special Kid Gorgeous, Mulaney said Jagger was "not nice" when they worked together during Jagger’s time as a host on Saturday Night Live in 2012. However, Mulaney also said that Jagger’s behavior was likely the result of being a huge star for many years.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Jagger said he had never seen Mulaney’s comedy bit. After hearing a summary of it, he agreed that fame changes people.
Jagger said living as a famous musician for decades is “not normal” and can make someone feel disconnected from everyday life. He explained that many people in the entertainment industry spend most of their time with other celebrities, making it harder to relate to ordinary people.
The Rolling Stones singer admitted that he has become distant from normal life but said he makes a conscious effort to stay connected. He said he likes to do simple things, such as walking on the street by himself and buying a newspaper.
Still, Jagger believes fame has a lasting effect. He said the experience can permanently change a person’s mindset, especially during their late 20s and early 30s, when success and attention can greatly increase a person’s ego.
Jagger also said his stage personality is different from who he is in real life. He compared performers to method actors, saying it can take time to leave a public character behind and return to their true selves.
Although Mulaney joked that Jagger would simply say “Diet Coke!” and one would instantly appear, the comedian also admitted that most people would probably act the same way if they had that level of fame and influence.
