Some Argentine fans interpreted the interaction as disrespectful, with some linking it to the country's longstanding dispute with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas.

Addressing the controversy on Tuesday, Horan said the like was unintentional.

"Honest mistake. Truly didn’t even realise I'd liked the post and don’t even remember seeing it. I have nothing but love for Argentina and all my fans there," he wrote on X.
