Photos showed Guthrie and her husband, Michael Feldman, at LaGuardia Airport. According to reports, her trip was already planned as she prepares to film NBC's upcoming Wordle game show, a project expected to keep her away for several weeks.
The security incident happened shortly after Guthrie had left the studio on Thursday. The suspect, identified as Andrew Truelove, allegedly entered the building looking for Al Roker but instead encountered Melvin. Authorities say he used a racial slur during the confrontation and now faces multiple hate crime charges.
Sources told the Daily Mail that the incident was especially upsetting for Guthrie because she has been dealing with the ongoing disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy, who has been missing since February. Family members have offered a $1 million reward for information, but the case remains unsolved.
Following the breach, NBC reportedly increased security at the "Today" show and strengthened Guthrie's personal protection. A security guard who allegedly allowed the intruder into the building has reportedly been fired. Melvin and Roker have also obtained protective orders against the suspect.
Guthrie is expected to return after completing filming for the Wordle game show.
