Adam Scott’s ‘The Office’ Audition Comes Back to Haunt Him in Daughter’s Acting Class

Adam Scott’s failed audition for “The Office” has come back to haunt him — this time in his daughter’s acting class.

The “Severance” star recalled the awkward story during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Thursday. Scott said his daughter recently told him that her acting teacher had shown the class his audition tape for “The Office” alongside John Krasinski’s successful audition.

The teacher reportedly framed the exercise by asking students to explain why Krasinski got the role while Scott did not.

“He put it to the class like, ‘Okay. Let’s discuss why he got the job, and he didn’t,’” Scott said.

Scott took the experience in stride, joking that he was simply glad to be featured in a prestigious acting class — even if it was as an example of what not to do.

“But I’m just happy to know that in a prestigious acting class, I’m the subject of what not to do,” he said.

The situation was more embarrassing for Scott’s daughter. After class, the teacher apparently realized that she was Scott’s daughter after noticing her last name. He stopped her on the way out and asked whether she knew one of the actors from the audition.

Scott said the teacher quickly “put two and two together” and felt terrible about the situation.

Krasinski ultimately won the role of Jim Halpert, one of the central characters on NBC’s “The Office,” which ran from 2005 to 2013. Scott missed out on the part but later found another major sitcom role as Ben Wyatt on “Parks and Recreation,” starring alongside Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza.

Krasinski later expanded his career behind the camera, directing and starring in the hit horror film “A Quiet Place.”

Scott also discussed his current projects during his appearance on “The Tonight Show.” “Severance” Season 3 is now in production in New York, although Scott said he does not know when the new season will be released.

He also stars opposite Robert De Niro in “The Whisper Man,” a new Netflix film scheduled to premiere Aug. 28.

For Scott, the old “Office” audition may not have led to the role he wanted at the time. Years later, however, it has given him a story — and perhaps an unusually memorable lesson for his daughter’s acting class.
