Banderas moved to the United States after falling in love with actress Melanie Griffith, whom he married in 1996. The couple, who share daughter Stella, divorced in 2015 but remain close friends. He also developed strong bonds with Griffith’s children, Dakota Johnson and Alexander Bauer.
Although he starred in acclaimed films including The Mask of Zorro, Evita, Interview with the Vampire and Desperado, Banderas said he always knew he belonged in Málaga rather than Malibu.
His latest film, Tony, explores the early life of legendary chef Anthony Bourdain. Dominic Sessa plays the young Bourdain, while Banderas portrays a mentor inspired by chef Ciro Cozzi. Banderas said he admired Bourdain’s No Reservations for being “about life” rather than just food, adding that his own experience owning eight restaurants made the project especially meaningful.
Tony opens in limited theaters on Aug. 7 before expanding nationwide on Aug. 21.
