Shomo, 33, said he came out to friends and family in September 2025 before publicly announcing in May 2026 that he was a “proudly gay man.”
Speaking on The Breakdown with Nath & Johnny, Shomo said he decided not to change how he dressed, performed or expressed himself after coming out. However, he said that choice was met with “a lot of opposition” and “a lot of homophobia.”
Shomo said he was already dealing with significant personal struggles and eventually stepped away from the internet to avoid the negativity. He said performing remained difficult because he often had to find enough energy to get on stage despite being in a “really, really bad place” emotionally.
He added that the criticism continued as Beartooth released more music and said his decision to be open about his sexuality did not make things easier.
Shomo also hinted that his next record will address what he has experienced, saying he has “a lot that I need to say” and needs to process and work through what has happened.
Shomo publicly came out in May. His bandmates and Fleur supported him at the time, with Fleur saying she would continue to “love and support him.” The former couple jointly filed for divorce that same month.
